Welcome to the Summer 2016 Watch Out for Fireballs! Rhythm Poll! Click, vote, it's all in the mind.

It's time to begin our epic quest to find the Summer Jam of 2016... by looking through the weird, oddball rhythm games of the past. This will be handled just like our brawler poll last quarter: This is not a winner take all poll. That's right, this episode will be a Split EP, featuring the top two winners that you choose. So, we will play first and second place.

You can find the poll at the very bottom of this page. I want to take some time to get you acquainted (or reacquainted) with the options before you vote. Thanks so much for backing us on Patreon. I hope you're as excited for this as we are.

THE DEADLINE IS THURSDAY, June 16 at MIDNIGHT EASTERN TIME.

THE OPTIONS

You are a crack squad of agents who use the power of rhythm to solve the problems of everyday people. This game uses every part of the DS touch screen to make the men in black dance along to songs like "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "September."

  • Gameplay
  • PSP, 2009.
  • Sony Japan Studio.

Patapon is a stylish portable side scroller that combines rhythm games and god games. Think of it as monochrome Pikmin. You must bang your drum in time with the music to level up your dudes and fell your foes. This would also be our first PSP game for the show.

  • Gameplay
  • Dreamcast, 2001.
  • United Game Artists.

A Dreamcast classic that's thankfully made its way to other platforms, Rez is a rails shooter with heavy rhythm elements that has you destroying beautiful wireframes to create frenetic EDM. Virbator attachment is optional.

This is about as simple as rhythm games get, but also incredibly charming. It's a much more kindhearted WarioWare, where you tap along on the touch screen through scores of micro-games.

  • Gameplay
  • Dreamcast, 1999 (Wii, 2008).
  • Sonic Team.

This is the OG, original peripheral-based rhythm game for home consoles. Sonic Team decided early on to make the Dreamcast as weird as possible, and gave us electric maracas with which to play "Livin La Vida Loca" and "Mambo No. 5". Note that if this wins, we'll be playing the Wii version.
